Which Type of Slate is Right for You?

Not only are there different types of materials you can use for your roof (metal, clay, and slate), there are also various subtypes that you can choose from.

We all know though that among the various types of roofing materials, slate is the best to use because of its durability and longevity. But when it comes to its subtypes, which is the right one for you?

Slate Roofing Tiles

There are three that are most commonly used by slate roofers, homeowners and business establishments. These are Welsh Penrhyn, Canadian Slate and Spanish Cafersa.

Examining Each Subtype

Before deciding which one you should use for your home, you need to understand the differences behind each one.

  • Welsh Slate

Produced in North Whales, these slates can last up to a 100 years or more, are non-fading and most importantly, are resistant to most environmental conditions. Among the three, this has the highest quality, is the most durable but is also the most expensive. But with the Welsh having been quality slate manufacturers for 200 years, their experience really speaks for itself and makes their slates worth every dollar. Because of this, Welsh Slate is recognised not only in Sydney and the whole of Australia but also throughout the world.

  • Glendyne

Produced in Canada, these slates are exclusively available from Cembrit. First opened in the early 20th century they are now considered as one of the best in the market, providing slates that can withstand severe weather and can last as long as the lifespan of a building. The slates though are most known for their exceptional slate deposit. The dark grey slates come in two thicknesses and various sizes.

  • Cafersa

Quarried from Spain, it is best known for being pyrite-free. This means that the slates won’t discolour or even rust. In has been sold in Europe for more than 30 years and now is also supplied in Australia. It comes in a blue grey colour and is available in various sizes and grades. Among the three slate types, this is the least expensive even though they offer a 100 year guarantee.

Choosing the Right One for You

When choosing which type of slate to use for your home, there are various factors that you need to take into consideration. Among these are:

  • Budget

If money is not an issue, then you should go with the Welsh Slate as there really is no other slate that is more durable and has a higher quality. But if you are constrained by a budget, the other two options will be great alternatives to choose from. The Spanish slate Cafersa though, being the least expensive among the three, is best for those who don’t want to spend a whole lot for their roofing but still want to get a quality grade slate for their home.

  • Use

If you want a roof that will last centuries and can be passed on to the next generation, then the Welsh Slate is the ideal material to use. These are like heritage tiles that will stand the test of time and can outlast even the lifespan of a building. Residential homes though that need slate roofing that will last only as long as its building will do well with the Glendyne slate.

  • Design

Not all slate types can provide multiple options when it comes to the sizes. So it’s good to examine each type and know what options are available for you. The Cafersa and Glendyne offer more options when it comes to size, thickness and grade so you can play around more with your roof’s design. When it comes to the colour though, all three only provide one option. Just choose which shade of grey you like best and choose the manufacturer that offers this.

Knowing the different types of slates and the various considerations you need to take into account, you can easily choose the right slate to use for your home. This way you’re sure to make a wise purchase that you will benefit from for years to come.
